What is a Standard?

A Standard is something that describes the absolute best way of doing something. Standards are the a culmination of current understanding people with expertise in their subject matter and who know the needs of the organizations they represent – people such as manufacturers, sellers, buyers, customers, trade associations, consumers or regulators. As such, standards should evolve along with our collective learning and understanding.

Standard Development.

The bottom line is it takes a lot of people working together to develop any standard. ICS’s role is to govern that process and oversee the independent technical experts on our advisory committee. They begin the process with the development of a draft that meets a market need within a specific area. This is then shared for commenting and further discussion. The voting process is the key to consensus. If that’s achieved then the draft is on its way to becoming an ICS standard. If agreement isn’t reached then the draft will be modified further, and voted on again. From first proposal to final publication, developing a standard usually takes about 6 months.

Standard Benefits.

How do you know the quality of cannabis that you are buying in the legal recreational market? We know that price point, THC and brand awareness isn’t enough to make an informed decision. Now think of this from the perspective of one of the many new cannabis users or connoisseurs that are migrating over to the legal market. Our ability to retain them as part of a consumer base is critical to our overall success in the cannabis industry. Like all new relationships, one bad experience at the start can result in us losing these individuals forever. In a highly regulated “dark market” industry with tight controls on what can be provided we need an alternative. We need transparency. We need to be able to clearly show how one product differs from another in a standardized way before they buy it. There is a solution. We have created an independent body and certification process who will grade cannabis in an unbiased way, using a combination of scientific data, statistical analysis and a panel of trained experts who will grade the sensory experience and inflorescence morphology. A simple grade and pictures will be provided for each batch that can be served up to customers that clearly articulates what they are purchasing. A scorecard, certificate, lab report and pictures of the graded product will all be easily accessible to the public so they can “see through the packaging”. The best part, the majority of the business will save money on each batch by using our service while increasing their value.
